Welcoming Address

1990

Dr. Henderson begins by pointing out that unity is the principle around which the Baha'i Faith is organized.  He takes us back to 1827, when slavery was abolished in New York and through the mid-nineteenth century to the Emancipation Proclamation and America’s Civil War. Baha'u'llah, Prophet Founder of The Baha'i Faith, states that the purpose of religion is to safeguard the interests and promote the unity of the human race. Martin Luther King led the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties and brought about his vision for racial equality, but that vision has become blurred by social and economic inequalities and the increase of hate crimes in our country. It is the duty of The Baha'i community to reshape our character and pass this training on to our children.  In the words of Dr. King, racial equality cannot be found, it must be created.
